Somebody was bugging me to put a thread up here... so here goes.
2005 WRX w/ Premium pkg - My wife and I bought it brand new in March 2005 from a dealer back home in Kansas.
I managed to keep the car stock for 2 years, then the madness started. I have a problem not leaving well enough alone with anything, especially cars and electronics.
Highlights
Mar 05 - Purchase car new from dealer
Nov 07 - Stage 2 (Invidia DP, Uppipe, Samco Turbo Inlet, STI Top mount and Cobb AP)
Aug 08 - Install GrimmSpeed everything (VF34 w/ STI pinks, Clark Turner e-tune)
--- car is burning oil like crazy, revert to TD04, oem injectors and Cobb Stg 2 map
Jan 09 - Stock Motor blown
May 09 - Built EJ205 w/ vf34 & DW650s
Jul 09 - Install JDM V8 6MT
Aug 09 - Retune with 6MT puts down 256hp/271tq @ ECS
Mar 10 - Install 68HTA, DW750s, FMIC and EWG, want moar power (made 260hp/250tq @ ECS)
4/8/10 - Install APS SR56, spin bearing on dyno...
5/27/10 - Rebuilt bottom end and install Trust Ti CBE, tuned at ECS on 93 pump gas (336hp/282tq @ 21psi)
8/11/10 - Blown motor?
1/11/11 - Back on the road with 2.5/2.0 Hybrid for break in
1/16/11 - Break in complete...
1/25/11 - EFI Tune - 326hp/336tq @ 21psi (MAF is completely maxed, will be getting re-tuned with larger intake)
3/4/11 - Follow up tune @ EFI (Knock sensor acting up, inaccurate numbers. Going back in a week with new knock sensor)
4/6/11 - EFI installed Crawford AOS and fix oil leaks, found leaky cam seals (just kidding, leaking power steering pump)...
5/9/11 - EFI Tune - 343hp/343tq @ 21psi
6/18/11 - Wicked Big Meet Best Vendor Car (representing NES)

Going on a month now... If the rest of the parts would finally show up they could get it finished. Still waiting on a rod and wrist pin, both have shipped.

JDM driveshaft any lighter than the 04' auto?
Lighter? I don't know. I'd guess it's probably a little heavier, as I think the STI driveshaft is a little beefier. When I get a chance to swap it I will compare them.

SWEET!!
I'm very happy to have my car back. The guys at ECS set there minds to it that they were going to have my car back to me before I left the shop yesterday, and early this morning I drove my car home.
Everything is running well, only thing is I need to go back and modify and the Trust catback as it's JDM length and needs about 4" removed - I was hoping that the slip fitting had enough play to compensate for this. Then, after a couple break in oil changes to get the assembly lube out of the motor we can get her tuned (2x ~50 miles). Paul was nice enough to loan me his SPT catback so I could drive the car until my new exhaust gets mated up.
Kojak77
05-20-2010, 04:37 PM
Sweet!!
That Trust exhaust is amazing. I was checking it out at ECS on Monday.
Kojak, Did you feel how much it weighs? The mid pipe feels like you're holding a piece of paper.
Next Wednesday my downpipe will get modified, then the car will go on the dyno to get tuned!!
Seraphinwolf
05-20-2010, 05:48 PM
Cutting a genuine GReddy Trust.... Hmmm... Not a fan of the idea. :-/ I'd trim the down pipe before going after the catback. But that's me.

Kojak, Did you feel how much it weighs? The mid pipe feels like you're holding a piece of paper.

Yea, I couldn't believe how light the mid pipe, and even the muffler part were.
Cutting a genuine GReddy Trust.... Hmmm... Not a fan of the idea. :-/ I'd trim the down pipe before going after the catback. But that's me.
We were originally thinking that to get rid of the step down at the end, it goes from 80mm to 70mm. However it's going to be too much of a pain to weld the titanium, so the down pipe will be shortened. Unless I can find a JDM length one before Wednesday.
Seraphinwolf
05-20-2010, 11:34 PM
Yeah my GReddy runs a 2.5" flanged midpipe with resonator out to the 3"... I need a different midpipe badly for when this thing eventually fires up. But having the qualitly is nice. Is yours a full 3" and full Ti?
It's full Ti and 90% of the piping is 80mm (3.15") and the last two inches by the down pipe is 70mm (2.75"). I really don't think it will hold me back any. It is the race version too, so there is no resonator either.
Seraphinwolf
05-21-2010, 04:46 AM
Drool... Want! Next you need a Beatrush front subframe like I'm looking at. I'm a weight reduction whore sometimes. It does firm everything up at the same time too! :)
That would be a nice piece. I also like the Oswald subframe, and their rear bumper beam. I need to find some nice summer tires. Then, my next big move is probably some seats, but I've got a number of little one-off projects I need to finish up first.
I want to get some new summer tires pretty soon here. I was originally thinking Dunlap Direzza Star Specs, but saw some Kumho Ecsta MXs that seem close in performance but are significantly cheaper. Any thoughts?
etaks99rs
05-22-2010, 10:07 PM
I love my yokohama S.drives! Way cheaper than the Star Specs.
Interesting thought. I will keep that in mind too.
Seraphinwolf
05-23-2010, 07:59 AM
SP Sport Maxx. They were on clearance a little while ago on Tirerack. May still be.
Couple small updates:
-Tires ordered. Went with the Star Specs, they are an aggressive summer tire that fits what I was looking for. My brother has them on his car and absolutely loves them.
-Oil pressure sensor fixed - The plug melted so we moved the sensor from the sandwich adapter to the rear galley plug and installed a new plug on the sensor.
-Oil change one of two since new bearings
Coming up in the next couple days:
Dropping the car off at ECS tonight. Tomorrow they will modify my downpipe to fit the Trust exhaust. Do a 2nd oil change to clean out assembly lube. Install GrimmSpeed AOS. Press new bearings into 04 STI rear hubs (hopefully). And tune the car for the SR56!!!!
Over the weekend I'm planning to install the STI rear hubs and R180.
Seraphinwolf - Any idea if you can run Whiteline ALK with the Beatrush subframe? Also, do you know if it has mounting points for an under tray? I'm running a Rally Armor subframe, which I'd like to keep on the car given my ride height...

I'd presume it bolts in just fine. Not like it changes the mounting points. How do you like the RallyArmour underguard?

Presuming the hubs get done, we'll be swapping it Sunday or Monday. I'll text you.
I'd presume it bolts in just fine. Not like it changes the mounting points. How do you like the RallyArmour underguard?
The Whiteline requires spacers for the oem subframe so I could see it being an issue. I'll looking into a little more.
The RallyArmour piece is a nice sturdy piece. Not sure it's worth the price tag, but my wife won it in a raffle at a show last summer and it's nice piece of mind.
:D
def nice car meng - love the green with the black - where did you get those headlights?
^Thanks. I got the headlights used on nasioc as bare housings with the projectors already mounted, it also came with ballasts, bulbs and a harness.
^Thanks. I got the headlights used on nasioc as bare housings with the projectors already mounted, it also came with ballasts, bulbs and a harness.
they look real clean  -
It is one of the most functional mods on the entire car too. The light output is fantastic. I really don't know how I drove at night before I had them.
I recently helped my brother do a FX35r retrofit on his car and they came out amazing too. Here's a pic of how his bi-xenons turned out:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4616827978_76b7a02e38.jpg
I'm a huge fan of retrofits, when done right they look amazing on the car and the light output is so much better than oem. I'm currently working with a buddy to do a retro on his 04 WRX and we plan to document the process as we go.
so when you go those housings were they custom modified or purchased with those projectors in them?
Yes. But that really just means the projectors bowls were trimmed and the projectors were bolted to the bowl. I had been planning to do it all myself, but stumbled across this deal. Which was easier and cheaper for me than sourcing my own s2k projectors.

****balls. I was hoping you'd be there in the afternoon.
I dropped the car off tonight. But my buddy said he'd come get me on his lunch break so I could be there to hear the exhaust when it gets fired up. So I should be there around 1:30 or so.
Took one crappy pic yesteraday after the exhaust was installed.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll301/rj_yeamans/05%20WRX/05wrx_trust.jpg
The sound is nice, and not as loud as anticipated, which is nice. But then again we were just revving to 3-4k and not building any boost.
By the time the downpipe was done and fitted there wasn't enough time to tune it yesterday. Should be up on the rollers first thing this morning.
:D
(My car's ass looks bare in this pic, the car won't sit on the dyno with the diffuser on. So we had to remove it and the rear spats...)

Why not just swap subframes? The STi one is firmer a hair. Or better find a tubular one! That's what i want eventually for my undercarriage.

That is always something that could be done later too. Would I not also have to swap lateral links? I'm really just looking for the beefier diff so I don't break things.

I don't have anything to weigh them with, but they are pretty light I'd say 20-21lbs.
Nice job guys on the photo shoot!
Here here. Pretty damn good for an impromptu 2am shoot.
Updated first post.
Got a couple little things done today. Removed JDM Power Folding Mirrors from my wagon and installed Prova Wide angle blue tinted mirrors and put on my car.
Also, started installed my Apexi TT and extended the rest of my wires to move my Defi controller into my center console - However, when I tested the controller it powered on, but now my gauges aren't. :unamused:

u gonna get rid of them mirrors?
I just swapped the JDM mirrors from my wife's car to mine. I have a set of '02 WRB mirrors I no longer need.
Installed a new Broadway 280mm Blue tinted Rearview mirror to match my Prova side mirrors. Loving it so far and it fits nicely between my visors without interfering.
R180, STI rear axles and 04 STI rear hubs/rotors should be installed tomorrow after work. I'd been waiting on a replacement backing plate and new bearings/wheel studs to be installed. I also picked up a Beatrush Rear Diff Brace that should be arriving today to go in with the R180.
Lots to do before Sunday...
No R180 yet... Not enough hours in a day. Have to leave in 2.5 hours to head to WBM...
Stop by the ECS booth and say hi.

I may or may not know a few good roads up here..;)
Doubtful on NEFR. Although a fun road is always a good time...
R180 swap is on hold for a week or two. Leaving town for a wedding tomorrow and collecting a couple other parts to swap at the same time.
Anybody got some trailing arms for sale? Looking at STI Pink arms or used Cusco arms...

What cha got in mind for next?
I've heard that the bolt for the lateral links likes to get frozen and chances are that I'd want to replace those bushings at the same time.
So I started researching some different options... ended up finding a nice set of lateral links with pillowballs. Ordered up some new whiteline trailing arm bushings and pretty much the only thing left is the trailing arms themselves.
I always get in the mindset of well, I'm in there might as well upgrade this too. It never ends well for the bank account...

Yeah all depends on how your undercarage looks. Mine surprisingly came appart pretty easy, but my trailing arms are trash so I have yet to force myself into getting my rear end finished up. Plus I need to figure out if I'm gonna be swapping the tank or not. I hate redoing stuff so I'm hesitant.
Well, my car only has about 55k on it and it didn't start it's life in New England. I was under it the other night checking it out and it didn't look too bad, but I decided to hold out and do these parts too. Plus, it will be much easier to do the rear trailing arm bushings while the hubs are still off the car.
Just waiting on a rear diff cover gasket to arrive and trailing arm rear bushings to be pressed into my hubs then I can finally swap in my R180 rear end. :unamused:
I'm going to try to get pics of all the new rear end parts this weekend...
Meanwhile these showed up today. Nice little JDM touch

Oh decisions... Anyone got any input on standalone EM systems? I've got a great deal lined up on a Hydra setup for my car...
I'd been considering AEM, but this deal is too sweet.
Thoughts? (I'm currently running Open Source)
I know ZERO about stand-alones, but i hear that tuning Hydra is very tough and not too many shops can do it. any reason other than the good deal to swap to hydra??
I'm not terribly familiar with stand alones, but from what I know you gain a lot more control to be able to fine tune your car. Just thinking about the future of my car, I'm not sure it is necessary. But would like to hear more about them, before I say yay or nay.
No need to keep this discussion in my journal...
Any thoughts bring them over here (http://www.newenglandsubarus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13662).
Well got 90% of the way through swapping my rear end parts today. Got all the way to mounting up my driveshaft and it won't mate up to my rear diff. I've had the driveshaft sitting in my basement for a year, as it came with my 6MT swap. It supposed to be from a JDM V8 STI. The rear diff is from a 05 STI. However the holes on the driveshaft flange are a little to close together to mate up. Not sure what driveshaft I have now, but looks like I'm on the hunt for a STI driveshaft ASAP.
Berge56
07-31-2010, 11:30 PM
Dude that f'n sucks! Can the holes on your driveshaft be modified?
Doubtful, they would have to be slotted and there pretty close to the edge of the flange already.
I could swap the flange on my old diff and reuse my old driveshaft, but I'd rather pick up a STI driveshaft that fits properly.
Berge56
07-31-2010, 11:49 PM
I would prefer you don't do that so that I can have a working rear diff and driveshaft for my 6 speed swap.

Sucks man :(
I think the driveshaft they sent me might have been from a JDM STI with a R160 if that is possible (they did send a 3.90 R160 with my swap too). It's definitely different from the WRX auto driveshaft I have.
I will swap companion flanges on the diff temporarily until I find a STI driveshaft to my liking. That way I don't have to worry about driving 8 hours to get one today or paying ridiculous shipping fees to get one here.
Psychoreo
08-01-2010, 11:13 AM
That sounds like the smartest plan
Here's a list of installed/swapped parts from yesterday:
05 STI R180
Beatrush Rear Diff Brace
Cusco Adjustable Lateral Links w/ pillowball mounts
JDM STI Pink Trailing Arms
04 STI Rear hubs (w/ new bearings, ARP extended studs and Whiteline Plus Trailing Arm Bushings)
Things that did not get installed:
STI Driveshaft (reasons above)
Perrin Rear Diff Cover (I screwed up some of the threads on the lower drain plug hole, need to see if I can clean them up and make it usable :unamused:)
All in all, it was a good day. The worsts parts were removing the old lateral links and installing the Beatrush Diff Brace. The lateral link bolts like to get frozen in the bushings, which makes for fun times. I had new hardware ready just in case it was an issue. And installing the studs through the Beatrush and OEM rear diff brace and threading into the diff was a bit of a challenge. I ended up lightly hammering my spare tire well so I could fit a socket on the stud.
I can't wait to take her out for a test drive. With that R180 in there I'm ready to see what kind of times I can put down at the track.

I think it looks good. The only you thing you can see without laying down and taking a peek is the pink trailing arms. And who doesn't need more pink?
STI driveshaft is on the way.
I haven't driven the car too hard since the install, but I don't really notice any increase in NVH (though, I can't hear anything over my exhaust). Overall the rear seems to stay put a little better.

Hopefully a compression test can be done today to confirm it. But I'd say a busted ring or worse. Without talking to the builder I can't really say where it will go from here.

Jan 2009 - Original motor blown (~50k miles)

May 2009 - New EJ205 with built bottom end is finished (rods, bearings, oil pump, pistons, headstuds)
Apr 2010 - Spun bearing on the dyno (~5k miles on new block)
May 2010 - Rebuilt bottom end finished (replaced everything but block, pistons/rings, 3 rods and 3 wrist pins)
Aug 2010 - Rebuilt motor blown (~750 miles on rebuild)

so now bad coilback cause cylinders to go completely bad..... :spin::banghead:

You aren't alone, I'm pretty sure its physically impossible, you know being that a bad coil pack isn't producing spark, which means that the cylinder is going to end up filling with fuel...

science is delicious!
sucks that this has happened again. just seemed like its all builder error at this point. not even a ****ty break in would cause this.. again..
Berge56
08-12-2010, 08:55 PM
Dropping spark in a cylinder is the prefered way to limit RPM's..... so the fact that a coilpack is bad has nothing to do with the cylinder not having any compression.
Also the valves are still opening and closing so I don't think the cylinder filling with fuel would be that big of a problem.
Its either A: the tune with detonation, which is what I am leaning towards, or B a bad ring that went unoticed by the builder.

Sorry to hear about that man. Hope everything works out.

No better answers yet. But I asked them not to dig into it any further yet. I want to make certain I'm not going to get stuck with bill from the them diagnosing what they screwed up. I am not willing to throw more money into the motor at this point, especially after what it's cost me so far.

Who was the builder?
I'd prefer to not name names at this point. No need to have it out with them online too.
I will keep this journal updated with progress.
(if you read through a little you can probably make a pretty good guess, they are a vendor here too)

unless you were doing something you probably shouldnt have been doing or signed something that said once the car leaves the shop its not their business then they are 100% responsible at this point. theres NO reason you should have to pay for anything let alone have yet another blown engine.

Hopefully everything works out.
Thanks guys. I'm stopping by tonight to talk to them in person. I've done a lot of research over the last few days and I feel pretty good about getting a plan setup with them to fully understand the failure, before jumping to anymore conclusions.
The thing that really bothers me is how sudden the failure occured and how damaging it seems to have been. Most all of the ring issues I've seen still had compression on the bad cylinder in the neighborhood of 60-80psi. The fact that mine had 0 leads me to believe that there could be more to it and it is something that went unnoticed after the rebuild.

Word. Good luck mang!
Actually went pretty well today. They are working with me and are going to pull the motor and disassemble it so we can see exactly what failed. Pretty sure we ruled out the coil pack today too.
I saw a picture of the cylinder wall they took with their boroscope (sp?), it's pretty messed up. Won't know more for a week or so, I'm kind of leaning towards a dropped valve. But we shall see.

And that would be the "fault" of who, exactly?
A coil pack causing detonation was a weaksauce airgrab
of an excuse, it will be interesting to see if $7K bought you
any "service after the sale".
We'll all be watching, skeptically, for sure.
Your build has echos of mine & STINate's, I'm sorry for ya man!
That's a good question... we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Trying not to get too far ahead of myself.
Should note, I don't disagree that a coil pack can cause detonation. It can, however along the way the car will misfire and generally run like crap. From my experience driving it that was not the case. The car was running quite well until it failed.

Yeah, if a coil pack was failing I'd think you'd know well beforehand...

I hope once everything is figured out you post up a detailed review of your experience with this builder and who they are. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a business/vender review section on this site. It'll only help everyone else here learning from yours and others experiences.

fun fun!
My motor likes to spend more time out of the car as opposed to in it. Ugh, to think of the downtime I've had over the last 18-20 months...
