Just picked up a 2001 subaru legacy outback wagon. 5spd. If I turn sharp enough, 90' degrees going over 15mph+, or if I hit a bump turning the wheel, the steering wheel surges, I know it's something to do with the power steering rack or pump, not in the suspension. There are no leaks at the rack or the pump, everything is physically intact & the pump is full of fluid. Any suggestions???

sounds like you have an air pocket in the lines. Eventually the bubbles go away after a little driving.

How many miles have you put on the car since you got it?

I bought the car with 119,300 miles, 1 owner, $2500. I had to replace the clutch & timing belt. Iv'e only driven 100 miles, I bled the system today, I think when I had the engine out & the power steering lines disconected air got into the lines, hopefully it will be fine, I dont think its in the rack.

make sure the line on top of the pump isn't kinked, or leaking. how is the condition of the fluid?

Differential sending the feeling of it binding back up throughthe steering system maybe? A friend's previous Impreza had a binding front diff that for the longest time I tried to contribute to the steering system as that's what it felt likeand until I had read further into it it made the most sense from physical responces of the car. Just an off chance if the probelm doesn't go away or isn't issolated.
