What happens when you are put on land burden by creatures from hell and your armed to the teeth with weapons? Well you send those creatures back where they came from. But its not gonna be easy.
Doom usually places you as a marine that gets stuck in a war when creatures from a dimention known as hell start poppin up and reeking havoc!
Doom was made by a company known as ID Software. Also famous for games like the Wolfenstien series and Quake series!
What makes this game scary is well it was the first game to really place you in this world in first person indulging you in the visual and sound experience of like if you were there and the marine was you!
and another scary note is in first game when you come across the boss which you'll hear in the distance moving around and your not sure what it is so you inch closer and closer till BAM your right there face to face with him just out of no where!

Picture this... Your name....... Doctor "Gordon Freeman".
Your apart of a group of a top secret facility known as "Black Mesa" that is all about figuring out secret weapons and means of fighting wars.
Your colleges stumble across a way to create a portal to teleport and ask you to be its first victim....err i mean user.
Something goes wrong. and all hell breaks loose as the portal lets in everything from this alternate dimension and you must save everyone that you can with whatever weapons you can find starting with your trusty crowbar. You also come across a strange fellow that resembles closely to a actual M.I.B agent who wants to use you to fight for him and seems to have some kind of power over you.

The second game continues as you left the first game
the world is over run by these creatures and some creatures created from various experiments to merge human dna to alien to create super soldiers.
You meet up with your old colleges once again after finding out that they are still alive after all this time. and find out theres a way to finally stop this war that has broke out apon the world. and this world order.
You also find out that one of your colleges has a daughter whos all grown up and ready to help you in any way possiable.
Will you Survive?

what makes this game scary? How about a intense non stop thrill ride as these games are famous for no cut scenes. Your always in the eyes of gordon freeman watching freely as everything around you goes crazy! and so much goes on you can make it like you will see new things every time you play the game over and over! and whats truely disturbing about this game is scientists are trying to figure out how to do this exact same thing that started in first game. as we speak right now.

theres a type of game style that actually involves horror within its Genre Name!
That being "Survival Horror Game". Generally this involves 3rd or 2nd person play with puzzle solving and tactics and action!

Resident Evil was the game that made this style of game play mainstream way back in 1996

It originally put you in a mansion where you had to face all kinds of fears from Zombies to Zombie Dogs and birds and strange creatures and beings. Suspenseful surprise scares and horrifying cinematics!

This game takes place in haunted mansion where a girl sets out to uncover a mystery.... and you really don't know much about the mystery until play into it. You weild your only weapon... a camera with magical properties within it. To take pictures of ghosts that will suck them in... In a very ghost busters like fashion i guess is the best way to describe it.

Now despite the fact on the quirky way of killing ghosts.
This game is so far the only game that gives me chills if i play it in the dark at night.
Cause it has a very ambient sound and likes to mess with your mind as to where things are coming... like you'll be walking along and such and bam you'll hear kids running behind you giggling for a few seconds..... or bam a ghost appears out of no where right infront of you in a way you were never expecting.
if you really want the **** scared out of you.... Dust off the ole ps2 or xbox and play this game. you wont be disappointed!

Last but not least... my personal favorite horror game.. May not be necessarily the scariest. But i garuntee you it will burn a imprint your brain that will last for a long long time

YOU ARE LATE FOR THE TEA PARTY!!!!......

Think of this game as after the original story and more towards "Through The Looking Glass".

Alice feeling that wonderland was just a dream enjoys life once again as normal. When all the sudden a fire breaks out. She survives as her parents die. She feels voices coming from the mad hatter and The Hare were crying for help from wonderland and saved her which soon lead her into a metal asylum. So she must find her way out of this predicament by going back to wonderland. Which she finds its not the pleasant place she once remembered as its grown dark. evil twisted psychotic and insane since her last visit. Will she survive...... or go completely insane like the residents of this crazy world.

Why is this game number 1?
Its got older graphics as it was released late 2000 but still good enough to make out fine details.
The voice acting and story build up are something that seems similar to what "Clive Barker" (writer and producer of "Hellraiser") would create. The charecters seem more something Todd Mcfarlane (famous for Spawn and his horrific action figures found in comic shops) would make.
From mangy cheshire cat with bones poking through big evil grin tattoos and a peircing or 2. to the hare and mouse turned into experiments by the hatter .... who has gone.... well quite mad!! :devil: and much much more
Possiably the most insane game ever made when it comes to psychological trip.

oh and after 11 years of the originals release. They will be releasing a sequel finally due to its cult fan base of the game (like myself loving it) look for it in 2011!

Honorable mention to Half-Life. Even though I love it so, I've never really considered it horror.

You're missing out with Bioshock. I played the first Silent Hill, and dig the story, but for some reason it never clicked with me. Maybe it they ever do a decent remake of the first or second, I might give it another go.

The prequel movie wasn't bad either. No shortage of plot holes, but still filled in quite a few of the blanks well enough.

You stumble across stories and cases and artifacts within the mansion that traces your families history back to the roman days find out theirs a curse and you must stop it some how.

How this was a psychological trip was because you actually had to make sure your charecter you were playing would remain sane as possiable. If he or she got too insane or lost too much health. it would be game over.
But wait it gets better!

when your charecter gets into a dangerous area of insanity. Things would happen to the game.
Like the screen would fuzz out. or a fly would go around on your screen (which would look real as hell!) or your audio would cut out. or the screen would go blank for a few seconds like the tv turned itself off and then back on.

Like a good fps that leaves you that what the hell did i get myself into situation?

This is your game. in the original You play a marine that basically is sent to world full of demons and ghouls you must destroy and survive with your large arsenal of weapons.
2nd and later games basically puts you into the future where you are sent to a enemy planet that is building a giant gun that is looking to destroy other planets... You and your squad go in for the kill in your fighter space ships but are shot down and now you find yourself alive and all alone on this planet... and must survive and destroy the big gun before its too late!

one of my personal fav FPS and really opened the door on Multiplayer when Quake 2 came out.

Like a good zombie game? where you can just go crazy killing zombies?!?!? this be your game

What the first game does is pitch you in New York State after Zombie epidemic that spread nation (possiably world)wide with 4 survivors. You pick which survivor you wish to be and go crazy killing zombies and trying to survive and get rescued some how!

The second game is the same exact concept but taking place in the Deep Dirty South with 4 brand new survivors.

Bioshock 2 + $10 Future Game Credit, $36 for PS3/360, $27 for PC.

I'm still debating on whether to get it for PS3 or PC. I want it for PS3, but other than Metroid Prime, I've always sucked hard at FPS without a mouse and keyboard.

I still kick myself for passing up on the $25 Bioshock 1&2 combo for PS3 a couple weeks back.

EDIT: Looks like GameFlop is matching the price and credit, at least online. Amazon and GameFlop have been going back and forth all week with some good prices.

has a very dark and rude and straight to the point story that takes place in the streets of LA CA where you get bit by a hooker who ends up revealing to be a vampire. and you get turned into a vampire in result of the bite. and is after to stop this family of vampires that started this whole thing. Lots of vulgar language. Sexual references. Blood guts you name it its here!

The game plays alot like Fallout 3 or Oblivion. Just in a modern day dark back alley Los Angeles setting. Can play in first person mode or 3rd person. you get blunt weapons. Swords and knives. and guns! You also get to create your charecter based on what class of vampire you want them to be and if you want them to be a dude or a chick. Also can change the look of attire you charecter with costumes you find later in the game.

Like i said its very dark. So if you like Dark Gothic feeling modern day games. You'll love this one.

This game also has the best haunted house sequences i've ever seen in a game to date. Like it will have you jumping a few parts really good with the lights turned off and sound up! oh yea

Also another factor i love about this game. it has a few songs on its soundtrack. But those few songs make up the best ****ing soundtrack IMO on any game to date!

Geez, you noobs and your BioShock. That game was nothing compared to the game it spiritually succeeded, System Shock 2. Here's a list in no particular order:

System Shock 2 - Much much better game than BioShock in every way but graphically, and also much scarier. BioShock borrowed everything from this game, they call it the "spiritual successor" since they couldn't get rights to the System Shock name from Looking Glass (who also created the first two Thief games).

Thief series - Lots of scary moments sneaking around in the dark. Thief 3 stands out the most for it's level "The Cradle", a level set in an abandoned orphanage and mental institution which is by far the scariest part of any game I've ever played in my life.

The Suffering - Creepy 3rd person shooter.

STALKER series - Nerve-wracking 1st person shooters set in the wastes of the Chernobyl NPP. Wandering around at night will scare the crap out of you.

Alien Vs. Predator - This game will make you jump out of your chair pretty often.

Dead Space - A surprisingly good game considering it came from EA. I really enjoyed it.

Silent Hill - The first game was the best IMO. The 2nd was good. The rest were just too played out.

Still Life - Excellent thriller/horror adventure game with lots of atmosphere.

Sanitarium - Very scary and surreal adventure game. A definite classic.

Condemned - At first I thought it was going to be a "tech demo game" of sorts, but it actually turned out to be pretty good.

They Hunger mod for the original Half-Life - This is the mod that kick-started the Left 4 Dead idea as well as the Ravenholm portion of HL2. Very good mod.
