wheel and tire fit?

i just bought a set of 17" 05 legacy gt wheels. i wanna put them on my 99 forester but the tires look like rubber bands, does anyone know how big of a tire i can fit on them, in order to take up some of the wheels gap? and where to find them?

it came with 205/45-17 on them and they were way to skinny, is 50-60 enough?
