View Full Version : Car just shut off

So tonight on my way home from work I pulled onto my street and got on it a bit, car pulled pretty good and then when I went to slow down I hit the brakes, downshifted and then the car just stalled out on me. Every dummy light was lit. I turned the key off and then cranked it over and it started up fine.

I installed a fmic a few weeks ago so I thought maybe it was a pipe that might have come undone but it wasn't. I'm at a loss right now. I know I need to get the car tuned but should a fmic make the car stall? Also, when I started it back up, there was a knocking sound but I think that was just the intercooler piping hitting the timing belt cover (not the greatest fitment). Any ideas?:(

I cant believe that a FMIC would make it stall......never know tho.

my gc did that while i was running a break in tune, occasionally going down a hill i downshift let the rpms drop and in between next downshift the engine would literally shut off. After my tune it went away.

That's exactly what I was doing. Going down a hill, brake and downshift, then....nothing. Looks like I'll be visiting a dyno soon.

subarus are finicky cars when it comes to mods and tunes

What are you running for a clutch?

I checked my vacuum hoses and my BOV. All in good shape.

when was the last time you cleaned the MAF sensor? If the answer is never, and it's craptastically filthy, i would think it's a possible cause.

Manuals (transmissions) sometimes need to relearn idle and slower rpm control when things are changed around. I'm thinking it just stalled because it didn't have a good grasp on keepin it running and let the IAC shut momentarily. The computer might not have fully adjusted to your changes yet.

I've been doing a ton of reflashes for the recall NA SUbarus and the manuals have a real hard time staying running if I dont relearn the idle. Just backing off my lift and putting the clutch in the RPMs will dive down to nearly nothing, then jump, then I rev it then the RPMs dive again, stalling sometimes.. to cure this I clear the memory, let idle with AC and Defrost OFF for 3 minutes, then idle with AC on for 3 minutes, then AC off for 3 minutes. Its good after that. Your car sounds like its only learned most of it. It hasn't found its target RPM it that situation (fmic and other mods, downhill, off gas to put clutch in, air temp, humidity, fuel temp ect ect ect)

With your fmic it might have not found a happy spot between over IAC-ing and under IAC-ing in all driving conditions yet. I'm sure a tune will help. And double triple check all air passages new and old.

So yeah, this is the internet. Take all diagnosis with a grain of salt. Its your car, we, dont know whats been done to it completely and dont know your mechanical skills. Only you can prevent forest fires. Hope i've helped at least a tiny bit. Good luck axis. I have a felling it might not happen again. Test beat that puppy and report back to us.

my 09 feels like its going to die every time i coast to a stop. The rpm drops right around 500 and then bumps back to ~800

Haha, thanks. What you've said makes sense.

Hows it going now? Any stalling?

Nope, hasn't happened again. But then again, I haven't really pushed the car since that happened. I'm waiting to get some things lined up so I can go and get it tuned. Till then, I'm just taking it easy. :keeping fingers crossed:

I like this answer. :)

for what its worth...

"a low idled sube in the spring... something is shaking that thing.."

as a quarter century of original runtime unfolds, some quotes become wisdom..

and for the hertz subes (all injecteds)... it is dramatic. The ecu may not even be slow..something is fighting.

remember the boxer is flat, like the earth was claimed to beonce upon a

time...

"take a whistling downdraft away, there will be games to play.."

oh god, I just said something smart again.

only kind of related but brings a little insight to my recent problems. Since I had my tune my car was running fine but after moving to NJ if i am stuck in traffic and driving low rpms stop and go traffic for a while it develops a harsh stutter at around 2,800 rpms. I wasnt sure if it was crappy NJ gas but after it happened again on thursday night and again on friday then I drove it hard all the way home to CT and by the time I got home the stutter was gone again...

With stop and go traffic, most people will tend to slip the clutch a little bit which can develop a shutter after a bit but the after a bit of normal driving it will disipate. Wow I think I overused the word "bit" just a tad, haha. Someone correct me on this theory if I'm wrong though.

well yeah some of the traffic i get in NJ i cant even glutet the clutch all the way out so slipping the clutch is a must but the shudder isnt when clutching. its when slowly accelerating. if you get on it it doesnt happen

I've been stalling like crazy of late and have been having an issue ofnte RPMs dropping out on my in slower traffic, slowing, or stopped then I gun it a little to "save it" cause if I don't it will stall out.
So yeah all those I read on the SVX network that it's symptoms of a dirty MAF. have you run any special filters with oils or maybe not kept up cleaning? I cleaned mine and it ran smoother right away. Though I think my 16yo MAF is dying cause it's back to it. Otherwise it could be O2 maybe. I'm gonna have Manch look at it.

I've never cleaned my MAF. I'll give it a shot when I get a chance.

are you running a blow off valve or the oem by pass valve?
If you are running a blow off valve thats why it stalled.

I have a hybrid, so I doubt that's why it stalled. Plus, it's been on the car for over 3 years without a problem.
