I rebuilt a computer, and simply bought the latest os to go along with it, windows 7. they seem to be retroactive decently, just shut off aero etc.
the chipset is an 865 onboard graphic getting a monster cpu for its purpose, a prescott.
Should I offer it with vista or windows 7? This for a "newbie". and want this to be as easy as possible.
the user is not compuer savvy just needs security, the net, strong runner.
I could offer to save money if vista'd or what should I do?

Win7 All the way
Vista and 7 are close enough where even if he/she came from XP they would still need to learn it.
If they piss you off install vista

+1 for 7. There's no reason not to for 2 reasons: 1) 7 is just all around better and imo is more intuitive then vista (although vista was still pretty damn easy to get used to), 2) 7 runs amazing on old/low end hardware. Personally, every system i've thrown it on that was designed for xp, it runs faster then xp did (that is, xp x86. Still can't touch xp x64).
I am a huge mac fan but i will vote win7... I use it everyday and i am impressed so far

If you have to go Windows, 100% Win7 all the way. Forget Vista ever even happened.

I will admit- I had to deploy Vista x86 on a dozen machines. If you ignore the general feel of slugishness, it's a middle of the road OS. Nothing amazing, nothing overly crappy. This is Vista post SP1, though. Before SP1 I refused to touch it and we spent the extra $99 per machine to stick with XP.
Then again, I did find a bug that MS hadn't realized made it to Vista RTM...so that was exciting. And what do you get for rinding a bug they marked as fixed but didn't actually include that fix in the shipping product? "Thanks." Literally. The word "thanks". In an email.
For the record, all of my personal machines and my desktop at work run Ubuntu. I haven't purchased Windows for myself in over 7 years now...and it feels SO good. I've even got Ubuntu running on my MacBook Pro. Take THAT Steve!

a bit delayed getting back to the thread.. but vista has the latest for 865 onboard, win 7 is done there..unless one can add an agp.
The win 7 ended up in the 875p (older workstation).. and fixed some silly errors I have been putting up with (the vid card is 725mhz- dx 11 installs by default for someodd reason.)
so.. if to encounter one abandoned...
prescotts forever.
