I was excited to get my hands on this car to see what we can do with it just by tuning. The car is bone stock, just a Cobb AP and our tuning. There is no Cobb maps out there to compare it to, so we had to just start from complete scratch.

Overall, the car did extremely well. There are some tables that need cracking still from Cobb as we were unable to make over 15psi, also there was some torque limitations I was unable to overcome. Considering those issues, I was very happy with the results, and the customer has a whole new car, again!

We will post some videos and pictures tomorrow, it's late and we have to close up. I can say at 14psi the car blew the factory intercooler pipe!! It was shocking to see this, but we do believe Subaru inserts that piece into the coupler to fail at a certain boost level. We removed it and went on our way with no issues.

Thanks,

Chris

I don't understand why subaru keeps making it harder to tune the ECU's

That's some nice tq. for no mods. What have you guys seen for 09-10 WRXs with just tuning?

Couple things I posted on the other forums.. There is much more to be had, I can't wait until an exhaust is released!

We stay in touch with Cobb Tuning, specifically Christian and Tim Bailey. I was awaiting a base map from Tim, but I was ready to start working on the car and he's a busy man. There are two major things that still need to be worked on.

1. Per gear Boost limitations
2. Requested Torque tables are not responding to commanded inputs.

There are a few other small issues, but I do believe that these issues are related to the two main ones listed above. I can say that the boost taper seen above is forced, if the ECU realizes more than 15psi after 5000rpm, it immediately cuts, so the taper was a necessity.

Tuning the car was a little tricky, rather than normalizing all the timing and cam timing tables (2010 LGT get's dual AVCS), we decided to work our way into modifying each table individually to see where the ECU reads from during different conditions. It's amazingly complex, yet simple. There is more work to do, I haven't spend as much time working the AVCS tables like I'd like to, but I can say that achieving full boost by 2800rpm and holding past 5000 should not be a problem, thanks to the new location of the turbo. Without the forced taper, I do not see a problem achieving 235-240whp on our dyno.

One thing to keep out for, the coupler that goes from the intercooler to the throttle body failed. There is a factory rubber insert that popped during the calibration process. We removed the intercooler, removed the rubber insert, and put it back together - No issues since.

Thanks,

Chris

In case you 2010 guys wanted to know what your car looks like with no front end on it.. :)

We put on some horns and HID's for Alex prior to his tune.. This was the before.

And of course, we were testing the car when it was in "Pursuit mode" on the dyno ;)

This is the piece that failed on the car.. As you can see, it's just an added coupler to the outside of the actual coupler that goes to the intercooler.. We removed it, and tightened the hose clamp, car never gave any other issues.

We have reached a finishing point with the Stage 1 tuning on this car. Thanks to Cobb Tuning and Tim Bailey @ Surgeline for getting us an updated software package that has the definitions needed to surpass the torque and boost limitations we were having.

Final Stage 1 - 223whp 304ft/lbs

EFI Stage 1 vs. Stock

+63whp @ 4000rpm
+107ft/lbs @ 3200rpm

Thanks,

Chris

As far as HP to value ratio goes, this tune would beat just about any mod out there for the money.

That's great work.

Subaru's repositioning of that turbo really worked wonders! WOW! Can't wait for someone to make a TBE.

In order to start building a "front pipe" for Alex's LGT, we needed a flange made for the turbo, so I got a turbo outlet gasket from Subaru... they thought I needed the inlet as well, so they sent both. So for most everyone who hasn't seen these yet, here are the inlet and outlet gaskets on this new turbo setup:

Updates?

EFI Logics

Well, the car has gotten a catback since we posted last, however we have not had it on the dyno yet since we should be getting a prototype "downpipe" from Cobb at some point, so it will be retuned then. However, we have tuned other cars with catbacks, and surprisingly, even just a tune with some different mufflers does make a difference, as you can see in this graph:

http://efilogics.com/dyno/graph.php?gb=0&hp=1&torque=1&rpm=1&sl=1&sln=1&runid1=795&rgb1=000000255&runid2=1001&rgb2=204000000

So we'll be looking forward to a full exhaust in the future.

Hasn't this car been out for almost a year? Why don't they have "downpipes" for them yet!! Crazy numbers so far.

Nice looking numbers! Over on LGT.com someone out west got a custom "downpipe" done up, along with the mufflers and tune and the power was enough to smoke the clutch- how has this been holding up? I'd like to do a tune but I am reluctant because of that.

My assumption is that since it's a completely different design, it takes some more work to get one out... plus, the Legacy certainly is larger and a bit less "sporty" out of the box when compared to the past models, so perhaps aftermarket companies are taking their time to see where the community goes.

None of the cars we've tuned here so far have had any issues with the clutch, so I guess we'll have to see what happens when we get a downpipe on and tune with that...

What Legacy are you talking about, Art? You mean the RS? :P I'm too flashy to rock a Legacy.

The turbo on the 5th gen does not have the capacity to push appreciable HP gains HP at the top end. Expecting gains below 5K. Attached is baseline Stage I 5th Gen and Stage II Spec B.

On Thursday, EFI installed components with a custom 3" DP low flow catback, 3" front pipe (aka BMC) and Megan Racing axleback exhaust. Stock Y pipe remains to connect the front pipe and axleback. All parts fit very well with no issues. The Stage II tune brings on more TQ and HP gains down low. The small turbo on the 5th gen spools up very quickly and is at full boost @ 3100 RPMs. Boost is above 16 psi at 2750 RPM and at the 18.2 max @ 3100 RPM.

The gains are noticable. 128-135 ft/lbs above stock (within 2950-3550 RPMs) and 60-85 HP above stock (within 2750-4250 RPMs). Very noticable down low @ 2400 RPM, 75 ft/lbs and 35 HP over stock.

As a spirited daily driver, the torque and power is right where you want it. I rarely push RPMs above 5500. What is very noticable over Stage I is the additive low end improvements in both TQ and HP. This results in a very "smooth" rocket from launch across the RPM range starting at 2400 RPM it pulls and pulls. The lower note from the Megans are appreciated. Can finaly hear a burble-like sound between slow shifts (equal lenght headers). Can also hear the turbo a little bit more. There is a little bit more cabin noise but not much. Stock LGT exhaust is very quiet and provided no engine noise feedback.

Tunes attached. The second compares the BMC and the AVO catbacks.

Thanks EFI Logics!
