View Full Version : Transmission leak?

So, I got the transmission replaced in the wagon with the one from RCKSTR/squeethebee (thanks again guys!). So far, everything seems to be going well more or less, except it's pissing out gear oil somewhere. I've gone through probably 3-4quarts in the 6 or so weeks I've had it back. I finally got under it the other day, and it looked to me like the rear driveshaft seal was leaking. The transmission case itself seemed dry, but the driveshaft, exhaust, and undercarriage were soaked from there back.

My mechanic took it today to replace that seal, but couldn't see that it was leaking there or anywhere else. Granted it's pouring today, and he said that may be why he can't see anything; he's going to take a look again once the weather dries out. In the mean time, does anyone have any other ideas of where this leak could be coming from if not from the driveshaft/axle seals? The stains on my garage floor indicate it's coming from the front of the transmission, but again, he said he couldn't see any leaks.

Any thoughts, no matter how extraordinary, are welcome.

It could be the tail shaft sea (easy replacement, remove driveshaft pull seal and replace)l, if it was coming from the clutch area it would be the clutch input shaft seal (pita just replaced mine, split the case yada yada)

Hopefully it can be figured out quickly and cheaply. Sorry about that guy, but glad it's in the car and that's moving again!

There are few places a manual trans can leak from. Axle seals, 2. Driveshaft seal, 1. The snout. The speedo sensors, or the seams of the case it's self. The axle seals are tricky on the Rex, theres actually an inner and outer, but generally replacing the outer takes care of slow leaks.

Get her up on the lift on a dry day, clean off snot, and drive at 40mph and see if you can spot the root of all evil. If it doesn't do it then drive it for a day and bring it back for another look.

My Gt's shift shaft seal has seepage, make sure the vent isn't blocked!

I'll definitely take a look at both the shifter and input shaft seals next time we get into it. I've kinda put it on hold for the time being, just because it seems to have slowed way down since I posted this.

What is and where is a shift shaft seal?
