Was driving to work this morning and popped a CEL. I scanned it when I got to work and the code was a P0420 Catalyst Threshold below efficiency. What does this mean?
I have a turbo back exhaust with no cat installed and thats it.

one of my fav sites:
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420
It's a bit more descriptive than the code book.

It means that your catalytic is about to **** the bed :(
You can pick up a stock replacement set up pretty easily/cheaply
If your car is less than 8 years/80k miles it's covered under manfacturer warranty ;)

i just found a exhaust leak where the uppipe meets the turbo. i bet that is causing it. looks like someone snapped off an upipe stud!

not sure if you can re-stud the UP.
What UP is it? if it's the stock or an STi one just buy a used one, they're cheap and all over the place.
Invidia makes a pretty cheap one too!

Uppipe install isn't that bad, I almost always remove the turbo to do it, takes about two hours normally.

weird, I thought i was somewhat competent at my job. must not be, because every uppipe i've done is a pain in the balls. :(

you get rid of that code with a tune, it's normal.

They can be, I've done it so many times I know all the right tools and tricks for when bolts and stuff get stuck. I think the worst thing is really the bolt that holds the DS bracket to the engine since it's a pain to get anything on there to get it loose.

Note to self... have someone else do the PITA up pipe swap... that way I don't have to become too creative :D
