And by old school I don't mean PS2 ;)
I'm talking Pong, Atari 2600, Nintendo, Sega Genesis.
^ I owned all of those :)
I remember the connecters that you had to screw in where the antenna connects

I'm an old-school PC gamer. I remember buying old games on 5.25" floppies and playing them on my dad's Packard Bell 286, like Duke Nukem (not the 3D version, there was a 2D version before the Build engine game).

i always thought this console was strange and unique.. This is one of the few i've yet to see in person
http://www.maniacworld.com/game_console_history/ColecoTelstarArcade.jpg
its a Coleco "Telestar"
It had the most unique style'd cartridges ever. as seen in this photo from its box
http://www.maniacworld.com/game_console_history/ColecoTelstarArcadeBox.jpg
yes they were triangular. It only had though "Tennis" (their version of pong)
quick draw.. (light guns were a new thing at the time)
and road race.
you'd use a different side of the console to play the certain game.. Like the road race you'd use the steering wheel... Quick Draw you'd use the light gun. and the tennis game you'd use the 2 dials.

thats kinda a rare feature ya got justin
if anyone that don't know the 32x was a feature people thought was gonna be able to keep up with the Jaguar and the Neo Geo
was a simple setup
What it consisted of was making a cartridge adapter that went into the genesis and then took in the "32x" cartridges which proved better graphics and some 3d gaming which was still brand new of idea at the time... Sadly it didn't make the cut.. Just like the Sega CD it failed marketing wise and vanished into thin air like it never happened

So when both the Sega CD and 32x flopped.
Sega had to come up with something to keep up with these game consoles producing cutting edge graphics and game play
So they released the Sega Saturn
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/10/game_consoles/image/slide9.jpg
it was new.. it was sleek. It played CD's. It played games in 3d and 32 bit. It was sega saturn.
Now this console brought forth games like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 1 to the world of gaming.. With game play and looks that no one seen before. (yes Play station didn't start that trend..... Sega did).
But with Sony releasing their playstation a year later.. it hurt sega majorly as Sony's style and games from top ranking companies just put the pounding on.
What ultimately killed the saturn was when Nintendo's N64 which came out another year later added insult to injury and nuked em

Now question..
Who actually pony'd up money for the worst consoles.
which ones am i talking about?
oh how about this
http://bluelinepro.com/storecomics2/images/VGD00767.jpg
Some of you might scratch your head and go "what the **** is this" well this was the Nintendo "Virtual Boy" and before N64 came out this was Nintendo's stab at 3d gaming and trying to create a immersive gaming experience by having game play shown through a pair of goggles.
It sounded great for a idea and even came out with a few decent games on its release.
The only problem it really had was that you were constantly looking at this
http://timecapsl.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/mario-tennis-virtual-boy_219150510_std.jpg
So to give you the full effect. turn off the lights
open up MS Paint if you have windows machine
fill in the canvas with a bright burning red with the bucket tool... and then stare at that for a minute or 2 maybe a few inches from your screen. and then turn the lights back on and you'll have the effect the virtual boy gave its users.
Another Worst console. Was a console that promised so much. But didn't deliever anything
The Tiger "Game.com" hand held.
http://rubbercat.net/archive/technewsrumorinsider/gamecom1.jpg
Now rewind for a second back to late 1997.
The internet was still kinda new to the public.
Gaming was jumping leaps and bounds thanks to the Playstation and N64
Tiger thought they had a winning product with a device they released called the "Game.com"
now this was suppose to kick nintendos game boy's ass in every way imaginable.
It was designed to be more of a PDA style portable gaming console. It had a touch screen with stylus. It could do apps like built in solitare game and calculator and phone book keeping. ect ect ect.
Its big selling point was that it was suppose to be able to support internet use.
Yes this was made to be able to use the internet. Meaning the internet could be used for a wider group of people.
It had the licenses of sonic, duke nukem, resident evil. and more
http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/1/14906/765817-tigshot2_screen_large.jpg
it had the winning combination and at $69.99 it was the cheapest in the industry. The problem? It was poorly marketed. Not enough enthusiam. The older crowd didn't get it and didn't want it.
The internet while existant was a failure as it was only text based. Poor. And hard to setup. And also right around this time Gameboy was set to release their Gameboy Color which would render the black and white screen of this console obsolete.
Very interesting piece of history. The same happen years later with a similar device
http://people.virginia.edu/~jmc4as/mlearn/images/ngage.gif
some companies never learn from the past i guess

Also another piece of gaming history for you gamers that been in the hobby for a long time like i have.
Did you know the Sony/Nintendo console wars started because of a **** up decision by nintendo?
Yep.
Rewind back to 1994.
Sega a few years back released the Sega CD a console that could merge with its Genesis console system and create a 32 bit graphic gaming system that could also play cd's.
Nintendo wanted to fight back with their own version of this idea and prove their dominance in the gaming world. So they hired electronic mecha "Sony" to come up with a attachment for their Super Nintendo that did the same thing as the Sega CD but better.
Sony came up with a attachment
http://www.nintendoweb.nl/images/snes_cd-rom.jpg
What happen next started the now decade and a half console (and still going) war between 2 companies.
They were ready and set to start marketing it at conventions and everything so they could start building a fan base and releasing it to the public.
Nintendo changed their mind and said they were gonna stay with cartridges. And work on a new console platform. Which ended up being the N64
http://oldclassicvideogames.com/images/Nintendo_64.jpg
Sony after being frustrated by Nintendo's Decision and coming up with a actual working product and then getting tossed in the dumpster.
They took their product made it into a stand alone console and called the "Playstation"

Gameboy's pretty much did the same
the worst of the bunch was the Atari Lynx
http://jokereinders.nl/media/images/atari.jpg
it was ahead of its time in every which way.. But its odd design (the extra buttons was for the fact you could go from right handed gaming to flipping it over and playing left handed and the screen would flip with it!), clunky size, small screen, and ify battery life held it back

Are you looking for them in order of release date? Because I remember each one. Also, I feel like "classic" gaming started before NES. If it was released on a full stand-up arcade machine first, it's probably a classic. :D
Well it did.
Home gaming goes as far back as 1972 with the Magnavox Odyssey
http://sonyps4.ru/images/console-history/4_magnavox_odyssey.jpg
and with the invention of the "Home Pong" in 1974

I owned a NES waaay back in the day. I had duck hunt and that track game with the mat you would lay down on the floor. I eventually sold that for money for a SNES that I still own but have no idea where and of the cables are for it :/
I mostly gamed back on the computer when I was younger
8088 2 tone sesame street games bought at stop n shop FTW!!
Then came the 386 days where flight simulators where really popular.
Then the good old days of Quake 2 on a P1 200mhz, gaming online with dialup!

yes I kinda remember that mod, its been so long I forgot most of the mods I played. Most of my fav mods from Q2 was weapons factory, Cry Havoc, Action Q2 and mother ****ing GLOOM!!!!!!!
Modding for that game was soo easy because it wasn't that advance of a game. Games now are too advance for the average joe to throw something together.
I also blame Counter Strike for killing the HL Mod community

oh btw...
those of you with old skool game systems but don't want them any more and aren't really in a big hurry to get rid of them..
Do some research.. You might be sitting on a gold mine that you didn't know about
There is a huge collectors market in old skool gaming now
Example
Kid has a sega genesis first gen model (they made various generations which you can figure out by lookin at the top of the console). Then has a Sega Cd. and then a 32x.
http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/3909/303288-segacd32x_super.jpg
keeps it in great condition never beat on it. or scratched it or threw the controller against the floor or wall or through a tv
has the boxes still with it in decent shape. Instructions still.
they generally go for about i think 200 bucks for the lot without games
now heres where it gets interesting.
Kid moves out right goes to college starts a family and just forgets about it
Mom finds it in attic and doesn't really realize what she has.
Has a yard sale. sells for about 10 bucks console, accessories, games and all.
Games also have their own unique value too depending on how rare, condition and if a special edition or not.
For example a hot item right now is
FF7 for the PS1
for the original release of this game which has the black label on it
http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/1089860856-00.jpg
the average going price is about 100 dollars because its very rare and final fantasy is a big name in the gaming world.
the rerelease which is the greatest hits version (green label)
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/1/197341_88285_front.jpg
goes for about 70 dollars. While still kinda rare its not as rare as the black label version.

thats kinda funny in its self that some one would pay that much for FF7 when PS3 offers it for 9.99 in their store lol
I liked FF3(USDM) better

well its not just the game that brings up the price but also the disc and condition of it itself.
Its kinda like a shelby cobra vs a kit car built to exact specs..
You can have the exact same fun out of the kit car as the real deal but the real deal is so rare and beloved that it brings the price up :spin:
kinda like this deal i found if your interested in buying and selling again for profit
http://nh.craigslist.org/vgm/1609480030.html
40 dollars for FF7 and 8. All the discs are there and the books are there and 1 case looks in good condition.. Might be a crack on the FF7 case. if so you can just buy another 3 disc ps1 game at a yard sale or something for dirt cheap that has no signifigant value... replace with all the goods from the FF7 case (if you know how to do that that is) and vola... like nothing ever happen to it.
probably could make atleast 60 dollars in profit off that
http://nh.craigslist.org/vgm/1609336429.html
this could be a money maker too if it decent shape
game gear itself would be worth atleast 30-40 bucks if not more.
the games probably another 20 bucks. So 30-40 dollars atleast in profit.
http://nh.craigslist.org/vgm/1605454119.html
first gen sega genesis that works and looks decent
comes with most of the sonic games that came out for it and a few other games with their cases still
Could be worth close to 80-100 dollars for the package. So 30-50 dollars in profit atleast
http://nh.craigslist.org/vgm/1602305495.html
heres one that could be anybodies game on if you'll gain money or not
its a rare NES 2
they made these after the original NES and instead of going into the machine from the front. It loaded on the top like the SNES did.. It was also smaller then the NES original. Also in this pack you get 3 kinda rare controllers.
some kinda rare games like the Tengen games (pacman and pacmania).
But looking at it i think he knows what hes got and was collecting the stuff more so then had it in his attic and just happen to pull it out for another round of fun.
So once again very interesting. I've only seen like 1 of these in person (at the game store in salem MA).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e0/NES2.jpg
also tengen games if your wonderin what those are and why they are kinda rare
Tengen was a game developer/distributor from Russia in the 80s. They made their games on a NES Platform without using the traditional looking NES cartridges
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ch4OhR3ESEk/SthC9wCMGdI/AAAAAAAAAIY/UUvwCpvTdNs/s400/tengen_tetris_supergameland.jpg
as seen here is their most famous cartridge (and probably the most valueable if found still in box sealed still from factory)
vs its traditional NES Cartrdige counter part
http://ui13.gamespot.com/2028/tetris_2.jpg
Tengen wanted to be different then NES while using their own product against them so to speak. So they bought rights to high end games at the time. and even released a few of their own concoctions. Once again most famous being Tetris (yes they invented Tetris).
They got into a lawsuit in the 80s with Nintendo about this whole scheme and lost and went out of business. They really didn't sell many cartridges when compared to their traditional NES counter parts. So the actual Tengen cartridges are now rare

http://www.biocrawler.com/w/images/7/75/Zombies_Ate_My_Neighbors_box.jpg
picked on horror icons in a very tongue in cheek kinda fashion!
Zombies
(just about any zombie film you can think of but i bet mostly inspired from. Romero's Dead Series)
Killer dolls (Childs Play)
Guys with hockey masks who chase you with chainsaws (Friday the 13th crossed with Chainsaw Massacre)
Giant Worms (Tremors)
Giant Baby (some would say "Honey I Grew up the baby" but actually. its a knockoff of "ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN!")
Giant Ants (THEM!)
Blobs (THE BLOB)
Killer Plant. (actually i have no idea where they got this idea from but i have a feeling it might be a slight take off of the story in "Creepshow" where a guy finds a meteor and it breaks in half and spewing a goo that creates a Weed like plant that grows and spreads like a wild fire with no way to stop it)
Werewolfs (pick a movie)
Dracula (once again)
Frankenstein (once again)
Mummy (once agan)
Swamp creature (Creature from the Black Lagoon)
Spiders (Arachnophobia)
and more!
